A former Haitian senator appeared before a judge in Miami, Florida on Monday (9) after being extradited from Jamaica for his alleged role in the murder of Haitian President Jovenel Moise in July last year. The Attorney General made a statement.
The prosecution announced that 51-year-old Joseph Joel John has been charged with murder and kidnapping outside the United States and providing financial support for a commando operation against Moise.
John will become the third person to be tried in Miami for crimes involving the life of the Haitian president, who died on July 7 at the presidential palace in Port-au-Prince. American justice has declared itself competent in the case, which claims that part of the plot will be held in Florida.
Two other suspects detained in the US are Colombian soldier Mario Palacios, 43, and Haitian-Chilean businessman Rodolphe Jaar, 49.
Palacios extradited from Panama in January pleaded not guilty, while Jaar extradited from the Dominican Republic has yet to appear in court to have his charges read.
If all three are found guilty, they could face life imprisonment.
John was detained by Jamaican police in January for illegally entering the island with his wife and two children, and in March US justice sought his extradition.
According to the prosecutor’s statement, the former senator met with the main suspects in the weeks before the murder. He would help obtain vehicles and weapons for the bombing.
More than 40 people have already been arrested as part of this investigation. However, there are many doubts about the motives for the murder, which further exacerbated the situation in Haiti, a country ravaged by poverty, insecurity and corruption.
