Kyiv, Ukraine, May 10, 2022 (AFP) – Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said Tuesday (10) that his country’s accession to the European Union is a matter of “war and peace” on the continent.
“I want to emphasize that Ukraine’s EU membership is a matter of war and peace in Europe,” Kuleba said at a press conference in Kiev with her German counterpart Annalena Baerbock, who supported Ukraine in the face of the Russian occupation.
Kuleba said, “One of the reasons this war started, [o presidente russo, Vladimir] Putin is convinced that Europe does not need Ukraine.”
For his part, the Chancellor also welcomed the “change of attitude” regarding Germany’s initial opposition to the embargo on oil imports from Russia and the delivery of military equipment to the Kyiv government.
“I would like to thank Germany for a change of attitude on several issues. Germany changed its position on arms deliveries to Ukraine … and announced the start of a new policy against Russia,” he said.
Kuleba particularly emphasized Germany’s “support for the launch of an oil embargo” on Russia’s crude oil imports.
Baerbock announced that Germany would reopen its embassy in Kiev, which it closed shortly after the start of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24. Initially, he stated that he would have “minimal presence”.
Baerbock had previously visited cities on the outskirts of Kiev, where Ukrainians accuse the Russians of committing atrocities against civilians.
“This is a place where one of the worst crimes imaginable was committed, and that’s why it was so important to me to be here today,” said Baerbock in Bucha, where dozens of bodies were found after the departure of Russian troops.
“We can do justice (…) As an international community, we can gather evidence to hold criminals accountable,” he said, according to footage broadcast on German television networks.
