Russian video platform Rutube, which is trying to compete with the American giant YouTube, was taken offline on Tuesday (10) after experiencing the “biggest cyberattack” in its history, the company said in a statement.
In a statement posted on Telegram, the company said, “In fact, we’ve had the biggest cyberattack in Rutube history,” noting that restoring access to the platform will take longer than the engineers originally calculated.
The main screen of the portal had a black background with the warning “Maintenance in progress. This site has been hacked. The situation is now under control and the user’s data has been saved” in white letters.
According to Rutube, the portal has been out of service since Monday, when Russia celebrated Victory Day in 1945 commemorating the defeat of the Nazis with a speech justifying the invasion of Ukraine.
The platform attributed the attack to the same “hackers” who had “constantly attacked the portals of Russian public institutions in the past two months” since the start of the Russian offensive on February 24.
Yesterday, Ukrainian media outlets published photos showing that “hackers” managed to sabotage the broadcast of several Russian broadcasters. One is labeled with the message: “The blood of thousands of Ukrainians and their hundreds of children is on your hands. Television and authorities are lying. No to war.”
