The United Nations (UN) said on Thursday (12) that the number of people who fled Ukraine to escape the war that Russia started on February 24 exceeded 6 million.
This is considered Europe’s worst refugee crisis since the end of the Second World War. Most of the refugees are women, children and the elderly.
According to the UN refugee agency (UNHCR) portal dedicated to the Ukraine crisis, the full number of internationally displaced persons due to the Russian occupation is 6,029,705 and more than half (3.2 million) crossed the Polish border.
Other key destination countries are Romania (895,000), Hungary (583,000), Slovakia (409,000), Belarus (27,000), Moldova (459,000) and Russia itself (785,000) – all in excess of the total number of passengers. According to UNHCR, refugees count people crossing the Romanian-Moldova border.
According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), another 8 million Ukrainians have been internally displaced. This is due to security risks, destruction of roads and other infrastructure, and lack of resources.
According to the UN portal, more than 4 million refugees from Ukraine crossed the border to neighboring countries in the first five weeks of the war alone, and many more had to move into the country.
