A man from California (USA) sold an old safe for US$97 (currently R$500) and was surprised to find about US$24,000 (R$126k) inside the buyer. James Labrecque wanted the object back, but got a simple “no”.

Labrecque decided to sell the safe as he didn’t have the password to open the safe, so he thought it was useless to continue with the object. According to the British newspaper Mirror, it was up for sale on eBay.

The buyer from the state of Tennessee (USA) took the case to a welder and was surprised by the amount found there: about $24,000, almost 257 times more than he paid.

After the lawsuit, James gave an interview to California TV WMC-TV and admitted that he was wrong not to insist on opening the safe. “I made a mistake, you know, that’s all it’s about, and it cost me dearly,” he said. “I shook it and didn’t feel anything in it, so I thought, maybe it’s just a locked safe, you know. That’s why I put it on eBay.”

Fearing bad luck, James asked for some of the money for compensation, but the answer was negative, and the buyer claimed that he owned the discovery, so he would not split the amount. “I won the ‘world’s dumbest’ award for my friend the other day, you know? I gave a $26,000 safe in it.’ I said.

Labrecque described the amount lost as something that would change his life and even exchanged messages with the lucky person who took the safe. On top of that, the buyer who gave James a good rating as a seller on eBay said, “What you get is what you get, no returns and refunds.”
