British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said he did not see how relations with Russian President Vladimir Putin could return to normal after Russia invaded Ukraine.
In an interview with LBC Radio, when asked if Putin would be welcome back on the global stage if he repented, Johnson said: “Remorse is going to be very difficult for Vladimir Putin right now… how can we renormalize relations for the rest of my life.” Now with Putin”.
Johnson said the world is in danger of repeating what happened in 2014, when Russia annexed Crimea.
“The world basically said: this is terrible. We denounced, we denounced – and we did. And we imposed sanctions. But we also started negotiations with him for a way forward,” Johnson said, according to LBC.
“Putin basically used it to bend the knife in Ukraine,” he said.
“If the Ukrainians make any deal with Putin now, the risk is he will do the same and they know it too. So the short answer is no. There is no renormalization and the UK is very clear on that.” .
