Former Uruguayan president José “Pepe” Mujica (2005-2010) warned in a criticism of the leaders this Friday (13) that politics is “too corrupt”.
Mujica, who was jailed for 12 years for being part of the National Liberation Movement-Tupamaros, recalled that politics “beyond parties and definitions” is “must have” because it defines “distribution”.
Speaking at the closing ceremony of the Emmaus World Assembly, the anti-poverty organization, the former president said, “Politics is not a profession to make money; those who want to get rich must go to trade or industry and pay taxes; politics is a passion.” and social exclusion.
Mujica, 86, who left active politics after resigning from his Senate seat in 2020, warned in front of the organization’s one hundred representatives from around the world that “often, the peoples, and especially the poorest, feel looted not only from a state but also from a state.” not only from an economic point of view, but also by the policies of “elective offices”.
“They didn’t invent modern republics and democracies to support noble societies as they did in the past,” the former president recalled, “remembering that societies made revolutions after the utopia that we were equal.”
But for Mujica, this maxim goes in the opposite direction: “We are in an increasingly wealthy world, we are faced with more financial difficulties, there is scientific advances, but we are growing with increasing inequality”.
As such, the former left-wing head of Frente Amplio warned that if society wants to promote democracy, it must be careful and be careful about “how those elected for political leadership are”.
He also called on citizens to “identify themselves, because they have to take a stand in the face of so many people’s pain and suffering”.
