A man who was hospitalized in critical condition died in an explosion at the Saratoga hotel in Havana, bringing the death toll to 46, the Ministry of Public Health said on Friday.
“To date, 46 deaths have been reported. The patient, who was informed today, was taken to Calixto Garcia Hospital, whose condition is critical”, the file states in the morning.
The death occurred on the second day of official mourning declared by President Miguel Díaz-Canel. There will be a watch tonight around the hotel, which exploded due to gas leakage a week ago.
Nine adults and four children remain in the hospital. 40 more people have been discharged since the day of the tragedy.
Located on Paseo del Prado in Old Havana, the emblematic five-star hotel has been closed for two years due to the pandemic and is set to open to the public on the 10th. Its first four floors have been demolished.
Built in 1880 and converted into a hotel in 1933, Saratoga was known to have hosted many celebrities such as Mick Jagger, Beyoncé and Madonna in recent years.
