Officials this Saturday, the house of Chilean Defense Minister Maya Fernández was burgled and one of President Gabriel Boric’s security guards was shot dead in another criminal act in Santiago (14).
Chile is experiencing “the worst moment of security since a return to democracy”, as crime soared weeks ago, both in numbers and violence.
Fernández, the grandson of former socialist president Salvador Allende, who was overthrown by the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet (1973-1990), was not at home during the robbery on Friday night, but criminals attacked her son and threatened her husband.
“There was a robbery on the property of the defense minister where his wife and one of his children stayed. As a result of this crime, unidentified people also took money and a vehicle,” police chief Jean Camus told reporters.
Also Friday, one of the security guards working on President Boric’s team was robbed and shot in the arm after being approached by a group of people while he was inside an official presidential vehicle.
The bodyguard, a sergeant from the Carabineros (military police), was alone in the vehicle and was returning to the La Moneda presidential palace to drop off.
Criminals approached him and took him to a place north of Santiago. He was beaten and shot, just left in the street. The thieves fled in the vehicle.
“To fight crime in Chile, we must redouble our commitment to security and increase efficiency levels,” Under-Secretary Vergara said on Saturday.
