Russian shelling hit a warehouse storing ammonium nitrate in Ukraine’s northwestern Kharkiv region, regional officials said on Monday.
“The explosion in the Kharkov region does not pose a threat to the local population,” the governor of the neighboring Donetsk region said in his Telegram profile, along with a photo showing the impressive orange cloud forming over the field.
“A Russian howitzer has reached a warehouse in the Kharkov region, where, according to preliminary information, ammonium nitrate is stored,” he informed the governor, noting that “the plume of smoke may be frightening, but there is no need to panic.”
Ammonium nitrate, which caused explosions in a part of the Lebanese city of Beirut and at the port in August 2020, is mainly used as fertilizer, but can also be used in the production of explosives.
Ukraine announced on Monday that its troops have regained control of part of the Russian border in the Kharkov region, the country’s second-largest city, which has been under constant crossfire since the start of the Russian offensive.
