French President Emmanuel Macron appointed Labor Minister Elisabeth Borne as the country’s new head of government on Monday, the Élysée Palace said in a statement.
The new prime minister, 61 years old and with a socialist background, is the second woman in French history to hold the post of prime minister.

Borne, who was also minister of ecology during Macron’s first term (2017-2022), is now replacing conservative Jean Castex, who, as expected, formalized his resignation Monday after nearly two years in office.
