Jordan’s King Abdullah II announced on Thursday that his half-brother, Prince Hamza, would remain under house arrest, more than a year after being accused of plotting against the kingdom, an unprecedented crisis that shook the monarchy.
Jordanian authorities reported in April 2021 a failed attempt to destabilize the kingdom and Prince Hamza was accused of endangering the monarchy, King Abdullah II speaks of a sedition.
In this crisis, Jordanian sovereignty, which has made the stability of the country its top priority for two decades, has to face an unprecedented fracture within the royal family.
” A Royal Decree was issued, approving the Council’s recommendations created in accordance with Royal Family Law, to restrict Prince Hamza’s communications, residence and movement. “
The Council released its recommendations in December.
King Abdullah II also announced his decisions in a letter addressed to Jordanians and disseminated by the royal palace and official media.
Sovereignty in its letter described Prince Hamza, 42, son of the late King Hussein and Queen Noor, of American descent, as living in a mental state that he is unable to distinguish right from wrong.
Shortly after the King’s announcement on Thursday, Queen Noor tweeted: Really weird and stranger-than-fiction things are happening right now.
As part of the case, two former high -ranking officials, Bassem Awadallah, former head of the king’s office, and Cherif Hassan bin Zaid, a distant cousin of the king, were sentenced to 15 years in prison in July 2021 for attempting to oust King. King Abdullah appointed Hamza crown prince in 1999 at the request of his late father, but he removed him in 2004 to name his son Prince Hussein, crown prince in 2009.
