Ukrainian authorities reported on Friday that Russian troops have completed the removal of hundreds of bodies from the wreckage of the Mariupol Drama Theater, which was bombed on March 16.
The theater, a bomb shelter, was used by Ukrainian civilians to protect it from constant attacks from Moscow. It is not known exactly how many people took shelter there, with estimates ranging from 500 to 1,500 people.
“We will no longer know how many civilians actually died as a result of the Russian bombing of the Dramatic Art Theater in Mariupol,” said Petro Andryushchenko, deputy mayor of Mariupol, quoted by the Unian news agency.
He said all the victims of the Russian attack were buried in a mass grave in Mangush, Ukraine. “It’s hard to imagine such a great war crime and against humanity,” he complained.
Since the attack, Russia has denied hitting the structure built in the 1960s, but given the impact and extent of the destruction, it is unlikely that the Russian military would not target the area.
