A senior Ukrainian official and Russian news agencies announced that the mayor of Moscow’s posting in Energodar in southern Ukraine was injured in an explosion on Sunday (22).

Andrei Chevchik was appointed mayor of Energodar after Russian troops captured the city and the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant located on its territory.

“We have firm confirmation that the self-proclaimed head of the ‘People’s Administration’ Chevchik and his bodyguards were injured in the explosion,” Dmytro Orlov, the elected mayor of Energodar, told Telegram.

He added that they had been transported to hospital “with injuries of varying severity”, but that the circumstances of the explosion were unclear.

He also noted that no other injuries were reported in the explosion.

Citing an emergency service source, the Russian news agency RIA Novosti noted that Chevchik was in the intensive care unit.

The explosion was caused by “a homemade explosive device”, citing a source from law enforcement, according to the Russian agency TASS.

Energodar, a city of about 50,000 inhabitants, was built in the 1970s around the nuclear power plant located south of the Dnipr River, opposite the Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia.

The power plant was the scene of conflict in the early days of the conflict, raising fears of a nuclear disaster in a country marked by the explosion of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor in 1986.
