According to a report by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), births in the United States are up 1% in 2021 from a record low in 2020 due to the pandemic, marking the first annual increase since 2014.
The report reports that 3,659,289 babies were born last year, with the increase due to women ages 25 to 49.
While the fertility rate and number of births are increasing in 2021, they are still below 2019 levels, said Brady Hamilton, a statistician at the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics.
Americans have had the fewest babies in more than four decades in 2020.
Donald Dudley, director of the Maternal-Fetal Medicine division, said: “I suspect birthrates have dropped (from 2019 to 2020), probably due to the economy related to the Covid pandemic, but last year the economy took a turn.” from the University of Virginia.
“So this gives couples more confidence that they will be financially sound and able to get pregnant.”
In March, the agency released data for the first half of 2021 showing that US births fell from 2020 in the first few months of the year, but increased in June.
“It will be interesting to see what happens next year after we’ve had issues with inflation and the recent downturn in the economy,” Dudley said.
