Nearly 1,500 people have died in Severodonetsk in eastern Ukraine since the beginning of the Russian occupation, according to a report released this Friday (27) by Mayor Oleksandr Stryuk.
The city, one of the most important cities of the Lugansk province, is besieged by Russian troops trying to completely conquer the so-called Donbass, which also includes the Donetsk province.
Also, according to the mayor, 90% of Severodonetsk buildings were damaged by the bombing, and 60% of the city’s housing estates were completely destroyed.
About 13,000 civilians remain in Severodonetsk, a municipality with a population of about 100,000 before the war began.
But, according to Lugansk governor Sergey Gaidai, Russian troops were not able to cross the Ukrainian defense lines in Severodonetsk. “The Russians are attacking the bridges connecting the city to the interior of the region to stop circulation,” Gaidai told Telegram.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Moscow of wanting to turn Severodonetsk and other Donbass cities such as Bakhmut, Lyman, Lysychansk and Popasna into “ashes”. “Just like they did in Mariupol,” he added.
Soon after, the pro-Russian forces of the self-proclaimed Donetsk republic expanded their dominance in the province by demanding Lyman’s conquest.
