“Machine guns at $ 40 dollars” and “16 acres of firearms”: National Rifle Association opens its convention in Texas

Houston was filled with giant billboards. “Machine gun for 40 dollars for rent”said one, showing a girl lying on the ground with her finger on the trigger of a large killing machine. Is that so the National Rifle Association its annual convention will begin this Friday in this city in Texas, the same state where four days ago 19 men and 2 teachers were shot to death at a school by a teenager.

Leaders of the powerful gun-rights group are preparing to “reflect”-and avoid any blame-on the hunt at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde. They will meet at an expansive convention center that promises “16 acres of weapons and equipment”.

Former President Donald Trump and other prominent Republicans will participate in the three -day event where the gun industry promote your productswhich is expected to attract protesters who are sick of gun violence (but also many fans of home arsenal).

Some of the speakers and artists scheduled for the convention decided not to goincluding two Texas lawmakers and singer Don McClean, who said be “disrespectful” continue their involvement after the most recent mass shooting in the United States.

As President Joe Biden and the Democratic congressmen renewed calls for tougher gun control laws, agency board member Phil Journey said the focus should be on achieve better mental health care.

He also suggested trying to prevent gun violence. and clarified that I will not support banning or limiting access to them.

Meditate

The NRA said in an online statement that the convention participants “they will meditate on” the massacre at the Uvalde school, “will pray for the victims, recognize our patriotic members, and promise to double our commitment to make our schools safe”.

Two Republican lawmakers from Texas who are scheduled to speak on Friday – Sen. John Cornyn and Rep. Dan Crenshaw-opted out because their aides said changes to their agendas.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott and Senator Ted Cruz, both Republicans, still appear on the list of speakers. But then the governor’s office said he would not attend.

Abbot, who is seeking re-election in November, will record video remarks to be shown at the NRA event, the governor’s spokesman told NBC News.

Trump said Wednesday he plans to attend.

The event will be held at the George R. Brown Convention Center and will last through Sunday.

“It will be a sample of the latest weapons and equipment“, the NRA celebrated on its website, describing it as “a weekend full of freedom for the whole family”.

The About 70,000 people are expected over the three days. Admission is free for NRA members and their immediate families, including children under 18 years of age, group site added.
