Shireen Abu Akleh, a Palestinian-American journalist from Al Jazeera, was killed by an Israeli soldier on May 11 while trying to escape during an Israeli military operation in the occupied West Bank.
The information, reported by the Maan news agency, was confirmed by Ahram al-Khatib, the chief prosecutor of the Palestinian National Authority (PNA). “The bullet that killed the journalist contained a piece of steel that pierced his protection,” he said at a press conference to show the results of the investigation.
The prosecutor explained that “the occupation forces fired directly at journalists, including Abu Akleh, without warning”. He also died of “head trauma”.
According to al-Khatib, Israeli soldiers “had a clear and direct view of where the journalists were in Jenin and that they were all wearing vests that read ‘Press'”.
While 51-year-old Abu Aklen was killed during the operation organized by Israeli soldiers, his funeral was marred by the violence of the security forces in Jerusalem. A few days later, Israeli police announced that an investigation had been launched into the clashes.
Following the statements of the Palestinian prosecutor, Israeli Defense Minister Benny Gantz denied the information and reminded that the Israeli authorities had launched their own investigation.
In addition, Gantz asked the Palestinian National Authority to show the bullet that killed the reporter, but according to him “the proposal was rejected as a joint investigation”.
“Any claim that the Israeli military is deliberately targeting journalists or anyone else not involved is a blatant and blatant lie,” he said.
