Former US President Donald Trump lost a race on Friday to block New York State Attorney General Letitia James from investigating her business practices, allowing the three-year investigation to continue moving forward.
By suing James in federal court in Albany, Republican Trump will use the lawsuit to advance the political career of James, a Democrat, as the civil investigation into whether Trump Organizations misled banks and tax officials about asset valuations.
James said in a January filing that “Trump’s allegations of political dissent will not protect him from investigation.”
District Judge Brenda Sannes dropped the case on Friday, stating in a written order that there was “no evidence” that the James investigation was conducted in bad faith.
“No one in this country can choose how the law is applied to them, and Donald Trump is no exception,” James said in a statement. “We will continue this investigation unhindered.”
Trump’s lawyer, Alina Habba, said she would appeal the decision, adding that “James’ scandalous behavior and abusive investigation” meant bad faith.
