A Russian freight vehicle has been stuck at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport since the invasion in Ukraine has been accruing parking fees of more than $ 1,000 per day.
The large Russian-registered Antonov 124, operated by cargo carrier Volga-Dnepr, has been parked at Pearson since Feb. 27.
This cargo plane arrived in Canada to deliver a cargo of rapid tests for the COVID-19.
But hours later, Federal Transport Minister Omar Alghabra announced that Canada was closing its airspace to all Russian planes, in response to the invasion of Vladimir Putin’s troops into Ukraine, launched on February 24.
Pearson spokeswoman Tori Gass said Thursday that the stranded plane is subject to regular parking rates at the airport as long as it remains parked on-site. He specified that these costs currently amount to $ 1065.60 per day.
