The Myanmar military junta announced the first judicial executions since 1990, including a former member of former leader Aung San Suu Kyi’s party and a prominent pro-democracy activist, a spokesperson told AFP.
A spokesperson told AFP that four people, including Aung San Suu Kyi’s National Democratic Union member and former MP Phyo Zeya Thaw, and pro-democracy activist Ko Jimmy, were “sentenced to hanging under criminal prosecution”. Spokesperson Zaw Min Tun.
The military junta that seized power last year has sentenced dozens of dissidents to death in an attempt to suppress the opposition, but has yet to carry out any executions.
Phyo Zeya Thaw, who was arrested in November, was found guilty of violating anti-terrorism laws in January. The well-known pro-democracy activist Kyaw Min Yu, nicknamed “Ko Jimmy”, also received the same sentence.
The spokesperson said that the convicts “continued the criminal proceedings and appealed by sending a letter to change the sentence”, but “the court refused”.
A spokesperson for the junta announced that there is currently no set date for the executions.
