President Jair Bolsonaro has decided to include the city of Orlando on his itinerary to the United States next week. Itamaraty reported that the Brazilian will be in Florida city to open a consular post. The official purpose of the US trip is for the president to attend the Summit of the Americas. However, within the Chancellery, Palácio do Planalto’s choice for a scene to take place in Orlando was questioned.

The event hosted by Joe Biden is on the other side of US territory, in Los Angeles – more than 3,500 kilometers.

Bolsonaro plans to make a stopover in Orlando, home to Disney and other amusement parks, from June 10-11. Although not formally briefed by the government, the president’s visit to the city coincides with an event that will feature speakers of Bolsonarism and their allies, including MP Daniel Silveira, Allan dos Santos, Roberto Jefferson, and pastors.

The city has a significant concentration of Brazilian residents and is still one of the main tourist destinations in the country. Brazilians had to go to Miami, where the country’s consulate is located, in order to be treated.

But in January, Itamaraty established a consulate general in Orlando, in addition to other offices with the same specialty in three other cities around the world. If the gesture is deemed appropriate and satisfies a request for more than a decade, senior officials in the prime minister’s office insist that a presidential visit is not an obligation to initiate a representation.

Brazilian diplomats, in fact, said they can’t remember the last time a president went to just one city to open a vice consulate. The parade was therefore seen as an election campaign act within the chancellery, a destination that was part of many of its supporters’ itinerary.

In Miami, in 2018, Bolsonaro garnered 91% of the vote against Fernando Haddad in the runoff.
