The conductor of the high-speed train was killed and several passengers were injured when the train derailed in southern China’s Guizhou province on Saturday, official media reported.
The train, also bound for Guangdong province in the south of the country, derailed after passing over rubble near a tunnel, according to public broadcaster CCTV.
Videos published in various media show that the locomotive was destroyed by the impact, while the rest of the train was largely intact.
These videos also show scenes of chaos in one of the cars after the accident; Passengers scream between luggage and food scattered on the floor.
According to CCTV, the driver died. An inspector and seven passengers were hospitalized, but “their lives are not in danger”.
Fatal accidents are rare on China’s world’s largest high-speed rail network. In 2011, about 40 people died in a train accident in Wenzhou, near Shanghai.
