The US accused Russia on Monday of “intimidating” US media correspondents in Moscow, who were called upon by Russian diplomacy and threatened to retaliate against US sanctions against the invasion of Ukraine.
“Russian Foreign Ministry urged its colleagues to ‘explain the consequences of their government’s hostile streak in the media’,” State Department spokesman Ned Price told reporters.
“Let’s be clear, the Kremlin is waging a real attack on freedom of expression, access to information and truth,” Price said, denouncing “an obvious and blatant attempt to intimidate independent journalists.”
At the end of May, Russian diplomacy spokeswoman Maria Zakharova threatened to deport Western media and journalists if the YouTube platform blocked their weekly interviews, as it had done before. On Friday, Zakharova accused Washington of “pressing the Russian media” in the United States.
“They are doing their best to make the job of the Russian media impossible. […] If they do not normalize the work of the Russian media on American soil, the spokesperson warned, “Strong measures will be taken in response”, announcing that representatives of American vehicles are “invited” to attend this Monday at the headquarters of the State Department Outdoors in Moscow.
According to Price, this is how Moscow reacted to the listing of three Russian television channels Pervy Kanal, Rossiya-1 and NTV a month ago on the US sanctions list as part of the international effort to counter the occupation of Ukraine.
