Mera was shot dead today in her own office in the capital, Santo Domingo.
The suspect, identified as Miguel Cruz, is a longtime friend of the minister, according to the note.
Dominican President Luis Abinader expressed his “deepest condolences” to the family of Orlando Jorge Mera.
“The government and the president continue to be open to the family for whatever they need,” the statement said.
Cruz is in custody by the National Police and Public Department, which has launched an investigation into the incident.
The 55-year-old minister is the son of former President Salvador Jorge Blanco and has been in office since President Abinader’s government began in August 2020.
