The accidental shooting of a two-year-old boy in Florida, USA, led to the death of his father. Local officials said on Monday that his family had left the loaded gun unattended.
On May 26, police went to the victim’s home near the city of Orlando after receiving an emergency call.
On arrival, agents found a woman named Marie Ayala performing CPR on her stabbed husband, Reggie Mabry.
Orange County Sheriff John Mina said at a press conference that the 26-year-old died in hospital shortly after, and that police initially thought it was suicide.
However, the sheriff added that a five-year-old boy, the eldest of three children, informed officers that it was his two-year-old brother who fired the gun.
According to court documents, the little boy found the gun in a bag Mabry had left on the floor and fired at his father, who was playing a computer game.
The entire family—the couple, two boys, and a five-month-old baby—was in the only room in the house when it happened.
According to Mina, Mabry and Ayala were paroled after committing crimes of child neglect and narcotic consumption.
Following her husband’s death, police arrested 28-year-old Ayala for manslaughter, possession of a firearm by a convicted criminal, and violation of parole.
“Now these children have lost their parents, their father is dead, their mother is in prison, and a child has to live knowing that he shot his father,” the sheriff said.
