An official from the National Emergency Management Agency said on Tuesday that 22 people were killed and 50 injured in Sunday’s attack on the San Francisco Catholic Church in Owo, Nigeria.
During the Pentecost Sunday Mass, unidentified persons attacked the congregation with weapons and explosives. Authorities had not previously released any death toll figures. According to the press, more than 50 people died.
It is not uncommon for conflicting numbers of casualties to emerge in the wake of tragedies in Nigeria.
Authorities did not disclose the identity or motives of the attackers.
Police said on Monday they seized unexploded bombs, as well as empty cartridge cases used in AK-47 rifles.
They said that some of the attackers positioned themselves among the worshipers, while others shot at the church from different directions.
Inside the church, bloodstains on the floor and walls, broken furniture, pieces of glass and plaster, and abandoned personal items showed the severity of the attack.
According to doctors, the survivors were receiving hospital treatment for cuts, gunshot wounds and blast injuries.
