North Korea has spent up to $650 million on weapons testing this year, an amount that could be used to purchase vaccines for the entire population, according to a study published on Thursday.

The amount “could have allowed us to counter this year’s food crisis and provide a single dose of Covid-19 vaccine to all North Koreans,” according to a report from KIDA, a research center affiliated with the South Korean government.

Pyongyang has conducted a record-breaking 18 weapons tests since the beginning of the year and continued its operations despite the Covid-19 outbreak that hit the country in May and infected more than 4.3 million people.

Although state media claimed that the coronavirus epidemic was under control, the World Health Organization (WHO) evaluated the situation as “worsening” last week.

“We ask all employees to strictly abide by the anti-epidemic rules, as the device must be activated in an emergency to combat the epidemic,” Pyongyang Health Director Kim Hye Kyong told AFP on Thursday.

North Korea has repeatedly rejected WHO’s offers to provide a vaccine. He also ignored offers of medical assistance from South Korea and the United States.

The country is facing a food shortage that is exacerbated by the self-imposed lockdown to ward off the pandemic and international sanctions against its weapons program.
