Ukraine on Thursday condemned Russia’s attack on a chemical plant in Severodonetsk, home to at least 800 civilians.

According to Lugansk governor Sergey Gaidai, at least two wings of the Nitrogen company were bombed, including one used for the production of ammonia, a chemical compound with several industrial applications.

The factory is home to about 800 civilians, including 200 employees and 600 residents of Severodonetsk, as well as Ukrainian military units that settled in the area as a result of the Russian advance into the city.

Severodonetsk is one of the most important municipalities of Lugansk in the east of the country and is already almost entirely under Russian control. But the city risks repeating the scenario seen in Mariupol, while the Ukrainian resistance is reduced to an industrial zone that has suffered heavy bombing.

Still, Gaidai believes that with Western-supplied long-range weapons, Ukraine can retake Severodonetsk “in two or three days.”

Like the neighboring state of Donetsk, Lugansk is part of the ethnic Russian-majority Donbass, whose sovereignty is protected by Moscow and has been the scene of separatist conflicts since 2014.

The conquest of this part of Ukraine was declared by Russia as its main goal in the invasion, after the failed attempt to take the capital Kiev at the beginning of the war.
