The committee that investigated last year’s attack on the US Capitol and the possible responsibility of then-President Donald Trump begins public hearings on Thursday, when explosive statements are expected.
In the first of six televised sessions, lawmakers will seek to demonstrate that Trump and his entourage committed crimes in a criminal conspiracy to reverse Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory, which culminated in the deadly attack on the Capitol on May 6. 2021.
Democrat and panelist Jamie Raskin recently said at an event at Georgetown University in Washington that the hearings “will tell a story that will really blow up the roof.”
“No president has done anything like what happened here (…), trying to stage a coup to reverse an election and upset the constitutional order,” he said.
Use the revolt of local violent extremist groups, white nationalists and racist groups, fascist groups to support the coup,” he added.
The key statements will be heard for the first time as lawyers will show texts, photos and videos to bring to light the plans the Trump administration allegedly began developing before the election.
The first hearing is when the panel will “present unpublished material on January 6 (…)” and coordinated efforts to the American people (…) to reverse the outcome of the 2020 election and prevent devolution,” summarized the commissioner in charge of the investigation.
“Illegal Actors”
After that, the committee, which has interviewed more than 1,000 witnesses, is expected to schedule hearings that will begin at 10:00 local time on 13, 15, 16 and 21 June.
The group will analyze different illegal schemes it claims were orchestrated by the Trump administration to stay in power, including infiltrating fake “big voters.”
“Major voters” are people who are nominated to vote for president on behalf of states after elections.
It will also uncover an alleged plan to seize voting machines and an alleged plan to delay Biden’s confirmation by Congress as president through the violent attack on the Capitol that killed several people and injured more than 100 police officers.
Investigators want to examine the 187-minute delay in the entry of more police to strengthen the Capitol and determine why there was an approximately eight-hour gap in phone records of calls from the White House as violence escalated.
One of the committee’s main challenges is to demonstrate the existence of a direct link between the alleged plot to reverse the election, Trump’s speech encouraging the mob to march to Congress, and the subsequent takeover of Capitol Hill.
The question of whether Trump is breaking the law has been answered in some ways.
Federal Judge David Carter ruled in March that “the illegality of the plan is blatant”.
As most of the evidence has already been made public, the committee is faced with the challenge of presenting a convincing and dramatic explanation.
Opinion polls place this investigation well below the list of Americans’ concerns.
