European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said today she expects “unity” from the European Council to give Ukraine “candidate country” status to join the EU. The statement was given to journalists after his visit to Kyiv yesterday.
“The challenge is to leave the Council of Europe in a unique position that reflects the enormity of these historic decisions. My wish is that when we look at the last 20 years, we can say that we have made the right decision by showing that we are not ashamed. Or we have a closed mindset,” said the Executive Director.
Repeating what he said with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, Kyiv has achieved “many” of its goals over the past 10 years and “many more need to be achieved”, according to von der Leyen. Our view on EU membership is known by everyone and is based on merit.”
According to European sources, Ukraine’s files will be considered by the bloc’s commissioners later this week, and an announcement on whether to grant candidate status will be made after the meeting next Friday (17). The European Council’s decision should be taken during the leaders’ summit later this month.
Chinese
As the Russian attacks in the eastern and southern regions of Ukraine intensified, China once again said that it did not supply any supplies to Moscow in the current war.
Defense Minister Wei Fenghe once again hinted at a meeting in Singapore that the United States was behind the conflict and that the war was not the responsibility of the Russians.
“The last thing China wants to see in Ukraine is a conflict or war. At the same time, we do not believe that maximum pressure or sanctions will solve the problems. On the contrary, it may cause more tensions.” He explained what was available.
Beijing also said it “continues to “always support” dialogue between Moscow and Kyiv and hopes the United States and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) will negotiate with Russia to “create the conditions for a faster ceasefire”.
