Venezuelan authorities arrested Cuban-American Jorge Alberto Fernández in February 2021.

Fernández was arrested and charged with “terrorism” while trying to enter the country through the border state of Tcáchira.

The Cuban-American was arrested “for carrying a drone,” according to the NGO Coalition for Human Rights, which condemned the case. Fernández said he was doing tourism and was stopped by the military at a barrier.

Another American, former sailor Matthew Heath, is also detained on “terrorism” charges for allegedly plotting attacks on oil and power facilities.

In addition, five former managers of the Citgo refinery, four Americans, and another permanent resident are behind bars. Washington demands the release of everyone.

Maduro and his entourage often accuse the United States of plotting attacks against them, including murders.

The president cut ties in 2019 after Washington did not consider his re-election fraudulent and instead recognized opposition Juan Guaidó as interim president.
