Video of a Brazilian stripper dancing was leaked this Wednesday during an online court hearing in Peru where a judge was considering whether the country’s president, Pedro Castillo, could be investigated on suspicion of corruption.
Explaining why Castillo should be investigated, prosecutor Samuel Rojas warned that “They show very obscene images” in a virtual hearing attended by the judge and the president’s defense, among other judicial authorities.
In footage posted by Judiciary and retransmitted by Twitter, the appearance of stripper Ricardo Milos, under the name of a user, defending President Castillo, attorney Benji Espinosa, delayed the hearing for several minutes.
A Supreme Court judge was considering a request by Castillo’s lawyer to annul the investigation against the governor for allegedly orchestrating a corruption scheme involving former Transport and Communications Minister Juan Silva, who is now on the run.
Castillo’s defense is trying to prevent prosecutors from questioning him at a hearing scheduled for Friday. The defense contends that Peru’s incumbent presidents have immunity and cannot be prosecuted during their five-year term of office.
“They largely leaked the footage and gave the impression that it came from my office, which I reject,” attorney Espinoza told Reuters by phone.
