Anna Cavazzini, Deputy Head of the European Parliament Delegation to Brazil and Member of Parliament, made it clear that the deaths of Bruno Pereira and Dom Phillips will have a direct impact on the country’s already deteriorating relations with the European bloc. He even argues that the violence was a direct result of President Jair Bolsonaro’s (PL) behavior.
“The deaths of journalist Dom Phillips and indigenous rights activist Bruno Pereira are dreadful news,” said Pereira, a leading representative of the group of ecologists in the European Parliament. “The Brazilian authorities should immediately investigate the background of these murders and bring those responsible to justice,” he said.
Cavazzini is chairman of parliament’s trade and globalization commission and is one of the main voices questioning the Mercosur-EU deal on the grounds that the deal could increase deforestation and still support Bolsonaro’s current policy.
Over the past few years, he has harshly criticized the Brazilian government and openly supported indigenous groups and human rights defenders in Brazil.
He now insists that the two murders cannot be regarded as mere isolated cases.
“These murders are also a result of President Bolsonaro’s defamation of human and environmental activists and his repeal of environmental and human rights laws,” he said.
For the Germans, the issue goes beyond the deaths of the two men in the Amazon. “This and future Brazilian government must do everything possible to ensure that human rights, environmental and climate activists are better protected in the future,” the MP added.
