A Dutch tourist died amid a gun attack against a Brazilian drug trafficker at a restaurant in the southern Brazilian Amazon city of Leticia, police said on Thursday (16).

According to the police report, two gunmen on motorcycles shot and killed Celso Caldas de Lima and injured his two escorts, all Brazilians.

A Dutch woman sitting at a nearby table was injured during the attack and later died in the hospital she was taken to. A police official asked by AFP said he was there for tourism.

Caldas de Lima was arrested five years ago during an operation against drug trafficking in Colombia.

He was later accused of linking Clan do Golfo, Colombia’s largest drug group, with Familia do Norte, one of Brazil’s largest. Interpol was looking for him for drug trafficking, murder and extortion. Police did not explain why he was released.

Officials said Colombia and Brazil share a 1,600-kilometer border of forest where cocaine produced by Colombian cartels is trafficked.

Colombia is the world’s largest producer of this drug, with about 143,000 hectares of coca leaves planted in 2020, according to the UN.
