Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told his French counterpart, Emmanuel Macron, on Thursday that he doubted the usefulness of meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin to try to end the war in Ukraine.

“I am not sure whether the president of the Russian Federation is willing to listen to what is being said to him on this subject,” Zelensky said at a press conference in Kiev with other European leaders.

“It seems like Putin is making decisions these days and then talking to someone,” he continued about them. “This isn’t just about Emmanuel. [Macron]. “I’m not sure there are leaders in the world right now who can force Russia to stop the war,” he said.

Zelenskiy responded to a journalist who asked him about the recent wave of criticism Macron has faced, especially for wanting you to “not humiliate Russia.”

The French president is one of the few Western leaders to meet regularly with Putin, which has sparked misunderstandings in Eastern Europe. Macron said he would not refuse to meet with his Russian counterpart again if the circumstances required it.

It is necessary to talk to Russia about food security and try to make progress,” he said.

“When a window of opportunity opens, it is useful to force negotiations to restart,” he added, reminding of the need for an end to the war in Ukraine.

But as I have always said and I repeat today (…), only Ukraine and its representatives, and especially the president, will decide on the methods,” he said.
