The election of Senator and former guerrilla fighter Gustavo Petro as Colombia’s first left-wing president sparked immediate rejoicing among Latin American leaders who shared the same ideological orientation. Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) has yet to comment on the victory of the left.

Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva (PT), former president of Brazil and candidate for the October presidential election:

“I sincerely congratulate comrades @petrogustavo, @FranciaMarquezM and all Colombian people on the important victory in the elections this Sunday. I wish Petro the best in his government. His victory strengthens democracy and progressive forces in Latin America.”

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro:

“I congratulate Gustavo Petro and Francia Márquez on the historic victory in the Colombian presidential election. The will of the Colombian people, who left to defend the path of democracy and peace, was heard. New times are approaching for this brotherly country.”

Venezuelan opposition leader Henrique Capriles:

“Today #19June, Colombians voted for peace and reaffirmed their democracy. In a little over an hour the result was known. 2 million live in Colombia [milhões] Venezuelans. We hope that the new president will lead them respectfully and without exclusion.”

Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador:

“The history of Gustavo Petro’s victory. Colombia’s conservatives were stubborn and tough. Writer José María Vargas Vila reported that his country’s dictators ‘dipped their daggers in holy water before killing'”.

Chilean President Gabriel Boric:

“I just spoke with @petrogustavo along with @FranciaMarquezM to congratulate him on his victory as the Colombian presidency. Joy for Latin America! We will work together for the unity of our continent in the challenges of a rapidly changing world. Let’s go!”

Argentine President Alberto Fernandez:

“The victory of @petrogustavo and @FranciaMarquezM that the election process in Colombia is over brings me joy. I congratulate the president who was elected for the confidence of the people in him.”

“His victory affirms democracy and secures the path to an integrated Latin America at this time that demands from us maximum solidarity among fraternal peoples.”

Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel:

“My most fraternal congratulations to Gustavo Petro on his election as President of Colombia in a historic people’s victory, @petrogustavo. We reiterate our willingness to move forward in the development of bilateral relations for the well-being of our peoples”.

Bolivian President Luis Arce:

“Congratulations to the Colombian people! Congratulations to our brother @petrogustavo and our brother @FranciaMarquezM on their victory at the ballot box today. Latin American integration is getting stronger. We join the celebrations of the Colombians. ¡Jallalla #Colombia”. Jallalla is a Quechua word meaning joy.

Peruvian President Pedro Castillo:

“I just called @petrogustavo to congratulate him on his historic democratic victory in Colombia. We are united in a common feeling seeking collective, social and regional integration improvements for our peoples. Brother Gustavo, we always count on Peru’s support” .

Ecuadorian President Guillermo Lasso:

“I congratulated @petrogustavo on his election as president of our sister Republic of Colombia and reiterated our government’s willingness to strengthen friendship and cooperation by prioritizing the development and integration of our peoples.”

Josep Borrell, head of EU diplomacy:
