Russian officials on Monday accused Ukrainian forces of attacking offshore oil rigs on the Crimean peninsula, which was annexed by Moscow in 2014.
“This morning the enemy attacked the Chernomorneftegaz drilling rigs. (…) We are working to save people,” Sergei Aksyonov, the Moscow-appointed governor of Crimea, told Telegram.
I’m in contact with our colleagues in the Department of Defense and intelligence agencies. “We’re saving people,” he said.
According to Aksyonov, five people were saved, three were injured. The search continues with patrol boats and aviation support.
Aksyonov did not say which platform was affected, but Chernomorneftegaz operates several oil and gas fields in the Black Sea and Sea of Azov.
This is the first report of an attack on a Crimean offshore platform since Russia launched a special operation in Ukraine on February 24.
