Sergei Gaiday, governor of the Lugansk region, said on Tuesday that the Russian army had caused “catastrophic destruction” in Lysychansk, its neighbor of Severodonetsk in eastern Ukraine.

“There are clashes in the industrial zone of Severodonetsk and catastrophic destruction in Lysychansk,” Gaiday said on Telegram. The message stressed that “the last 24 hours have been difficult” for Ukrainian forces.

The governor said that attacks on three bridges connecting the two cities, separated by the Donets River, continue, but although these bridges have already been destroyed, it has left Severodonetsk isolated from other areas controlled by Ukraine.

“The Russians want to completely conquer the Lugansk region by June 26,” said the governor, before insisting that they could not.

Gaiday described the first hours Monday through Tuesday as “the calm before the storm” and more artillery strikes are expected in the coming hours.
