German Economy and Climate Minister Robert Habeck said on Tuesday (21) that the recent cuts in Russia’s gas shipments to European countries constitute an “attack” aimed at “creating chaos in the European energy market”.

“Reducing gas supply through the Nord Stream 1 pipeline is an attack against us,” the minister said in front of businessmen in Berlin.

He added that this was an “economic attack” “perpetrated on purpose” by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“We’ve seen this move several times, with gas deliveries to Bulgaria, Poland and Denmark being reduced,” Habeck said.

He said these measures were aimed at “creating chaos in the European energy market”.

Russian group Gazprom recently announced a 40% cut in gas deliveries via Nord Stream, followed by another 33% cut, citing technical issues.

To face this situation, Germany announced on Tuesday that it will generate more electricity in coal plants by 2024.
