On Tuesday, the United States confirmed the second American citizen killed in the fighting for Ukraine. They also warned of risks due to the concerns of two other captured citizens fighting the Russian invasion.

The State Department said that 52-year-old Stephen Zabielski died in Ukraine and was providing consular assistance to his family. A newspaper in Zabielski’s hometown published an obituary describing his death on May 15 “while fighting in the Ukrainian city of Dorozhnyank.”

“We reaffirm that US citizens should not travel to Ukraine due to the ongoing armed conflict and the targeting of Russian government security officials at US citizens in Ukraine,” a State Department spokesperson said.

The spokesperson urged U.S. citizens in Ukraine to “immediately leave using any available commercial or private road transportation option, if it is safe.”

Zabielski is the second American to die in conflict in Ukraine since the Russian invasion began in late February. The first was a former sailor, 22-year-old Willy Joseph Cancel, in late April.
