Delegations from Russia and Ukraine will meet in Istanbul next week to discuss the creation of sea corridors for grain exports in the Black Sea.
Representative Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and UN Secretary-General António Guterres are required to attend the negotiations, with the aim of opening Ukrainian ports “within a month”, according to Turkish presidential sources quoted by Milliyet newspaper.
The exact date of the negotiations has not yet been officially confirmed, but a military delegation from Turkey is expected to travel to Russia this week to discuss the operation of the grain corridors.
The Turkish plan envisages exporting 35 million to 40 million tons of grain from Ukraine via the Bosphorus and Dardanelles in the next six to eight months.
Russia imposed a naval blockade on Ukrainian ports on the Black Sea, preventing Kiev from exporting millions of tons of grain to other countries. This scenario threatens to cause a food crisis of global proportions, with rising prices in the international market.
Moscow requires ports to be cleared of mines to ensure access to Ukrainian shores, but Kyiv fears doing so will make sites vulnerable to Russian attacks.
