Estonia accused Russia of violating the country’s airspace on Tuesday (21), after detecting the presence of a Moscow military helicopter (21). According to the first information, it is an equipment that serves in the protection of borders.

The Baltic country is part of both the European Union and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), and after the incident, the Tallinn government summoned the Russian ambassador to the country for clarification.

“Estonia considers this incident extremely serious and deplorable, which always causes more tensions and is absolutely unacceptable,” the army said in a statement. Also, according to the official statement, it is only the second such event in 2022.

The invasion, which lasted about two minutes, took place in the Koidula region in the southeast of the country. The military reported that the pilots did not provide the flight plan and the electronic reconnaissance function was not activated. Additionally, radio links with Estonian air traffic control did not respond.

This is not the first time a European country has accused the Russians of occupying its airspace since the war in Ukraine began.

Between April and May, the Danish and Swedish governments brought the same accusation against Moscow. All these nations fear that Russian President Vladimir Putin may launch attacks similar to those in Ukraine due to the proximity of the region.
