The 5.9-magnitude earthquake in Afghanistan on Wednesday left at least 1,030 dead and more than 1,500 injured, according to Paktika province’s Information and Culture Department.
The agency told the state news agency “Bakhtar” that of all the victims and injured people mentioned, it only shows Gayan and Barmal districts.
Earlier, the US Geological Survey reported that the epicenter of the earthquake was in the city of Khost, the capital of the state of the same name.
Neighboring Paktika was most affected by the earthquake in terms of the number of dead and injured.
In addition, Mohammad Nasim Haqqani, spokesman for the Afghan Ministry of Disaster Management and Response, told EFE that 25 more died in Khost province and five more in Nangarhar.
Many humanitarian organizations are already working on the ground in the rescue, in coordination with Taliban officials, according to the UN High Commissioner for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
Five Afghan Ministry of Defense helicopters, more than 50 ambulances and a large team of health workers were dispatched to Paktika and Khost provinces.
However, the work was hampered by heavy rains and heavy winds, which prevented several planes from reaching the hardest-hit area, for example.
Mohamed Ayoya, UNICEF’s representative in Afghanistan, issued a warning today about the vulnerability created by the earthquake for thousands of children.
