The Congressional committee investigating the attack on the US Capitol last year announced Wednesday that it will halt its hearings after receiving a series of video material about Donald Trump and his family from a documentary.
Committee Chairman Bennie Thompson told reporters that Thursday’s hearing on Trump’s alleged attempts to corrupt the Justice Department will be final until it resumes “at the end of July.”
“The timing of the hearings is and continues to be determined by the investigation. The elected committee continues to receive relevant new evidence that we think will be crucial to the investigation,” said an aide to the panel.
The new evidence includes documents from the National Archives and several new leads that have come through a hotline since televised hearings began in June.
The most valuable material will be a compilation of hours of video footage from documentarian Alex Holder, who has extensive access to Trump and his children and his inner circle, including Vice President Mike Pence, from and before and during September 2020. January 6th.
When MPs return from a two-week hiatus in the second week of July, they are expected to devote the remaining sessions to the radicalization of the extremists occupying Capitol Hill and the far-right culture of political violence.
The New York Times reported an increase in violent threats against the nine-member panel, in a sign of the political tension surrounding the hearings.
Among the abused is Adam Kinzinger, one of two Republicans on the committee, whose wife received death threats against him and their five-month-old daughter.
Liz Cheney, the panel’s vice chair, was forced to suspend major public events, in part because of concerns about her safety.
These developments come after officials in Arizona and Georgia testified at their fourth public hearing Tuesday, in which they announced Trump’s efforts to hold on to power, which included intimidation of local officials and election officials. They also accused the former president of defaming and publishing his personal data.
