The Kremlin described the decision to grant Ukraine and Moldova candidate status to join the European Union (EU) as an “internal European” issue amid Russia’s offensive on Ukrainian territory.
Kremlin Spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said, “This is an internal matter for Europe,” and before emphasizing that it is “important” for Moscow, “all these processes are related to Russia and (…) .
Talking about Russia’s relations with the EU, he said it would be “hard to make them worse”.
Relations between Russia and Western countries have been going through a very bad time since President Vladimir Putin decided to send troops to Ukraine, which triggered a series of sanctions.
Regarding Moldova, Peskov said of the former Soviet republic that “Europeans want to be more European than he is.”
“The more anti-Russian they appear to them, the more Europeans will love them,” he said.
