Germany will turn to foreign workers to end the chaos at airports amid staff shortages and flight cancellations as the holiday season approaches, ministers said on Sunday.

“The government plans to allow the entry of foreign workers who are urgent to find temporary employment in Germany,” Labor Minister Hubertus told the newspaper Heil Bild. said.

“Employers must pay a standard salary and provide good temporary accommodation,” the Social Democratic minister continued.

The government did not specify how many foreigners would be invited to airport staff, but the number could reach “four digits”, or at least 1,000, according to Bild.

After two years of disruption due to the Covid-19 pandemic, European airports are facing staff shortages, which has led to long waits, flight cancellations and chaotic scenes.

Also, there are employee absences due to the resumption of coronavirus infections in Germany.

According to a study by the German Economic Institute, around 7,200 professionals are currently missing at German airports.
