Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky (29) said on Wednesday that his participation in the G20 summit in Indonesia in November will depend on who is on the guest list.
Zelensky, who led his country’s resistance to the Russian occupation, made no mention of Russian President Vladimir Putin, whose presence on the island of Bali was the subject of difficult diplomatic negotiations.
“Of course I accept the invitation,” Zelensky told Indonesian President Joko Widodo, who is visiting Kiev.
But Ukraine’s participation will depend on the security situation in Ukraine and the composition of the summit participants,” he said.
Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi said on Tuesday that Widodo had removed Putin from the guest list, but the Kremlin has rejected it and the Russian president will be at a meeting of the leading industrialized and emerging powers.
British Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged on Wednesday not to boycott the summit, even if Putin attends. But Johnson told reporters on the sidelines of a NATO summit in Madrid, “I would definitely be surprised if Putin comes in person. He’s a pariah figure.”
