At the direction of Planalto Palace, Itamaraty sent a statement to all Brazilian embassies abroad this Thursday, ordering their social media accounts to be temporarily suspended and replaced with new profiles with strict rules on what can be posted.

This may be due to the start of the closed election period, which will begin on July 2. In addition to the suspension, the Ministry’s corporate communication activities, including the overseas Postal network, must comply with the restrictions imposed by the legislation.

In addition to “Flickr”, “TikTok”, “LinkedIn”, “SoundCloud” and others, all material on “Facebook”, “Instagram”, “Twitter” and “YouTube” should also temporarily suspend their profiles.

According to the information received by the embassies and consulates, the accounts should be replaced with new temporary profiles. But only about the function of transmitting information of direct interest to the citizen and about postal services, such as opening hours for passport renewal and other documents.

Comparisons with previous administrations or adding adjectives to texts are prohibited in new accounts.

As for the personal profiles of presidents, ambassadors or civil servants, the responsibility lies with the account holders. However, Itamaraty recommends that the measure adopted in official accounts be repeated in personal profiles.

However, guidance on various missions around the world has been met with concern.

The column asked Itamaraty if the same suspension decision had been requested earlier in the 2018 election, but for now the chancellor has not made a statement.

It was also agreed to suspend all disclosures of the Federal Government brand in advertisements or any communication action for the election period. The only maintenance of the brand “Pátria Amada Brasil” will be a prohibited advertisement.
