Pope Francis has been tough on the United Nations, arguing that “has no power” to stop the “wars” and he warned that for this it is necessary to have “courage and creativity”.

In an interview with the Télam agency, the Supreme Pontiff analyzed the role of the United Nations when asked whether it is possible to achieve peace through the intervention of multilateral organizations.

“After World War II there was a lot of hope in the United Nations. I don’t want to offend, I know there are good people working, but at this point it does not have the power to impose itself“said the Pope.

According to Francis’ vision, the UN helps to prevent wars, as in the case of Cyprus, “but to stop a war, to resolve a situation of conflict like the one we are experiencing today in Europe, or like those experienced in other places in the world, it has no power“.

“It’s just that the constitution he has doesn’t give him power,” he insisted.

For Francis, international organizations currently require “courage and creativity”. “Without these two things, we will not have international institutions that can help us overcome these very serious conflicts, these deadly situations,” he added.

He also said that it is time to “rethink” the concept of “just war”. “There may be a just war, there is the right to defend oneself, but, as that concept is used today, it must be rethought. I have declared that the use and possession of nuclear weapons is immoral. Solving things with war is saying no to the ability to dialogue, to be constructive, which men have, “he said.

The situation in Latin America

The former archbishop of Buenos Aires and former cardinal primate of Argentina spoke of Latin America, a region which, as he indicated, “is still on that slow path of struggle” to realize the dream “for the unity of the region. “that José de San Martino and Simon Bolivar.

For the Pope, Latin America “has always been a victim, and will be a victim until the liberation is complete, from exploiting imperialisms“.

“The dream of San Martín and Bolívar is a prophecy, that meeting of the entire Latin American people, beyond ideology, with sovereignty. This is what we must work on to achieve Latin American unity. Where every people he feels with his identity and, at the same time, he needs the identity of the other. It is not easy “, said Francis.

After the physical problems he has had to face in recent months, Jorge Mario Bergoglio, 85, who began his pontificate on March 13, 2013, preferred to leave the answer to God about his future in this life and to lead the Church.

When asked if there will be “Pope and Francis for a while”, he simply replied: “Tell the one above”.
